PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PRESENTATIONS FOR SCHOOL STAFF & CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS FOR STUDENTS

Rhonda Riggott Stevens’ work and advocacy efforts with food allergy management have been cited by school districts, used in college courses, and written about in various books, magazine and newspaper articles nationwide. Rhonda Riggott Stevens was a member of the committee that drafted the Guidelines to Managing Life-Threatening Food Allergies in Connecticut Schools in 2006, and the chief organizer of the Food Allergy in Schools Summit. She is the President of the Food Allergy Association of Connecticut and a Connecticut certified public school teacher. Rhonda Riggott Stevens has taught children at the elementary, middle and high school levels, and is the parent of two children with severe allergies. Given her professional and personal experience, she has a unique and comprehensive perspective on the challenges that educators face when managing the special needs of children with severe allergies in school.

Each professional development presentation is tailored to the needs of your school staff and can include one or all of the following topics. Professional development presentations will:

  • Explore allergy and anaphylaxis basics with a PowerPoint presentation.
  • Provide a forum to discuss the challenges that classroom educators and other school staff face when managing severe allergy in today’s schools.
  • Offer strategies for working with parents and caregivers that promote a team approach to management.
  • Offer strategies for effective communication among school staff about allergy management.
  • Offer strategies for effective communication with physicians to determine appropriate accommodations.
  • Explore strategies that promote both physical safety and social normalcy for children with severe allergy.
  • Assist staff in locating resource materials that improve management efforts.

Each classroom presentation is tailored to the needs and age of your students. Classroom presentations to students will:

  • Provide an age-appropriate introduction to severe allergy.
  • Provide learning activities that are tailored to students’ various learning styles and cognitive development.
  • Offer differentiated instruction that is engaging and meaningful.
  • Focus on learning activities that are interactive.
  • Explore strategies for being supportive of students with allergy.
